How might I purchase a CD of all 50 Best Christian Songs of All Time?

Derek Hill February 24, 2013 at 6:07 pm

Hello Carol. This is an article representing what I believe are the 50 best Christian songs ever made. I don’t think you can find a cd with all of them on it. Thank you for your question and for stopping by Faith and Entertainment. God bless you!

Pamela Rose Williams February 28, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Great job on this article Derek. I do believe it has something for everyone. How great to read down the list and now to have several great songs in my heart. Thank you for this.

Derek Hill February 28, 2013 at 4:31 pm

Thank you Pam. This was a very enjoyable article to write as well. I listened to many of the songs while I wrote it. God has a great way of filling your heart, mind and soul when you are praising Him through music. Thanks again! God bless you!

stephanie April 12, 2013 at 9:12 pm

Derek Hill April 12, 2013 at 9:26 pm

Thank you so much for your encouraging comment Stephanie! Christian music has a great way of touching the soul and bring us close to God! God bless you!

Brian April 13, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Awesome list. I do have two more that I would have put on though. I would have included How Great is Our God, Chris Tomlin and Your Love Never Fails, Jesus Culture Band

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Thanks Brian! Both suggestions are great. Chris Tomlin has 3 songs on it already though. God bless.

Mary April 13, 2013 at 10:48 pm

This list is great, but I can’t agree. I personally think Keith Green was one of the greatest Christian artists ever- so no list of great Christians could be complete without a song from him.

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:25 pm

Thank you for your suggestion Mary. Unfortunately, I am not too familiar with Keith and his works. I know he has written some great songs, but I haven’t had the chance to listen to him. I will check him out. God bless!

Kelly April 14, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Yes, Keith Green songs should have been all through this list. Maybe a Blind Willie Johnson song too. This list is a nice list, but it is pretty much songs from the last 10 years.

I am sorry to be critical, God bless you Derek.

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 10:04 pm

No worries Kelly! Thank you for your input. I value everyone’s opinion. God bless you!

Chuck M April 13, 2013 at 10:59 pm

Wow, not one Keith Green song! His music is anointed for sure. Kind of the Chris Tomlin of his generation. You should look him up!

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:26 pm

Thank you Chuck. I am not too familiar with Keith Green, but I will check him out. Thanks! God bless!

Peter Reichwein April 13, 2013 at 11:45 pm

I don’t understand how the Top 100 does not include Petra, Phil Keaggy, Amy Grant, Keith Green, The Imperials, Randy Stonehill, David Meece, Rez Band, Rich Mullins and other artists off this lilst……..

You need to explain how this list was assembled – for these and a few other names not being on here would be like not including The Beatles and Elvis Presley on the list of Greatest Rock ‘n Roll artists for secular music……..

Mind you – much of what is on this list I have little/if any objection………still…..

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:30 pm

I appreciate your suggestions Peter. This was not an easy task and I realized while making it that I wouldn’t please every one. It would be impossible to please every one, but I put the songs on here that I felt God wanted me to. With that being said, Petra, Phil Keaggy, Rich Mullins and the rest you have mentioned definitely are amazing artists and their songs reflect their faith. God bless!

Andrew J. Persac July 27, 2013 at 8:55 pm

To those who questioned about Keith Green (who ironically is playing on my laptop as I am typing this NOW), he DOES have a song on the list – #12, O Lord You’re Beautiful. Several of you must have missed it. Also, AMY is also on the list – #67, That’s What Love Is For, which happens to be one of my FAVES from her, as is #7 in the TOP 10, El Shaddai (though Michael Card did originally write & record it). As to Petra (my ALL-TIME fave Christian BAND of any style) & a couple of those others, YES, one could question their exclusion from a Top 100 Songs or Albums list. But this is DEREK’s personal opinion, based on HIS knowledge and preferences of/for Christian music. And remember, he is a metalhead who could have put a lot of THOSE songs on it (though I love Christian metal myself, especially Stryper, who also is conveniently missing from the list as well, & his Top Metal Band list too :O )…………. Good night, God bless, & all have a blessed Lord’s Day tomorrow at church, etc. A

Derek Hill July 27, 2013 at 9:58 pm

Hello Andrew! Thank you very much for your comment. All of these earlier comments were posted before the article was re-vamped. This is an altered list from the original. I am a big fan of Stryper by the way! To hell with the devil!!!! Blessings on you! Thank you for stopping by our site!

Joe B April 14, 2013 at 1:42 am

I sure wouldn’t want that task—top 100. But C’mon, In the Light 77th place???!!!!??
Just keepin it real! : ]
Romans 8:1

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:32 pm

Thanks for keeping it real :) I always appreciate our readers suggestions. Great scripture reference by the way. I love that verse! God bless!

Michael Liberto April 14, 2013 at 4:19 am

You have assembled an awesome list of amazing artists and wonderful songs. You may get a slew of whatabouts, but I would advance Steven Curtis Chapman. Just a suggestion though, God bless.

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:35 pm

Thank you for your suggestion and encouragement Michael! God bless!

Stephen Bedard April 14, 2013 at 5:10 am

No Keith Green in the 101 best Christian songs of all time?

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:36 pm

I am not familiar with his songs. I know who he is for sure, but I have never taken the time to listen to his music, and I will definitely make time for it now. Thank you for your suggestion! God bless!

LauraS April 14, 2013 at 5:21 pm

No list of the “Best Christian Songs” can exist without at least one from Rich Mullins. Shame on you…

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:39 pm

Thank you for your suggestion Laura. I know I couldn’t please every one on this article but I put the songs on here that I felt lead by God to do. Rich Mullins was a great writer though, and his faith was very strong. God bless!

Eric April 14, 2013 at 5:30 pm

Nice list, but without Amy Grant or Michael W. Smith? Love the songs here, but it seems more like the top 100 of the past 5 years.

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:40 pm

I appreciate your suggestions Eric. Both of them are great choices that could have been included. Unfortunately someone is always left out :( God bless you!

Justin Kron April 14, 2013 at 5:39 pm

Two Sets of Jones’ by Big Tent Revival and Rocketown by Michael W. Smith

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:43 pm

Thank you for your suggestions Justin. Unfortunately these lists will always leave someone out of them. These are great choices though and I appreciate your feedback. God bless!

Justin Kron April 14, 2013 at 5:42 pm

And I have to agree with the others who are wondering where Keith Green and Steven Curtis Chapman are in this list. Time to go back to the drawing board.

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 5:46 pm

Thank you again for your suggestions Justin. I put the songs on here that I felt led by God to put. I haven’t heard any Keith Green songs and I am going to go and educate myself on him now. Steven Curtis Chapman is a great choice though. He is a faithful man of God and his lyrics show it. God bless!

Patrick Green April 14, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Sorry brother, but these might be the best of the last two decades, but no Keaggy, Petra, Stonehill, Dallas Holm, Servant, Rez Band… The list needs some old school pioneers!

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 8:02 pm

Thank you Patrick for your suggestions. Keaggy is an excellent choice! I will include him in an article somewhere down the line for sure! God bless!

Andrea Akerstrom April 14, 2013 at 7:53 pm

Great list! There are a few I am not familiar with so I am excited to check them out! Right now I personally have three songs that I could listen to over & over again-two of them made your list- “Worn” & “You Are More” by Tenth Avenue North. The third is “Where I Belong” by Building 429. That song spoke to me in such a profound way! They did make it on the list with two of their other songs though. :) God Bless!

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Thank you so much Andrea! I’m glad you liked this list! God bless!

Eddie Pierce April 14, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Of all time? Where is the Christian music from the 80’s and 90’s? Where on the list is Steven Curtis Chapman, Rich Mullins, Petra, Mylon Lefevre, Michael Card, Keith Green, Amy Grant, Twila Paris. Can’t be of all time should have titled it “best of 21st century.” Can’t leave out the 80’s and 90’s.

Derek Hill April 14, 2013 at 10:07 pm

Thank you for your suggestions Eddie. I do value and appreciate your opinion. God bless!

Daniel April 18, 2013 at 12:33 pm

I’m so glad you put Cloverton’s song Take Me Into The Beautiful so close to the top. Its such a cool song. I Also love Lay Em Down and Something Beautiful by NeedToBreathe and Wait and See by Brandon Heath.

Derek Hill April 18, 2013 at 3:38 pm

Thank you for your kindness and thoughts Daniel! God bless you!

Duncan Balch April 25, 2013 at 1:55 am

This is a great list of music and very hard for myself to disagree with. On the other hand, I would only add “How He loves” by John Mark McMillan. Other than that, this is a great list. Great Job! God bless you!

Derek Hill April 26, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Thank you for your kindness Duncan! “How He Loves” is an amazing song! Thank you for your suggestion. Thank you for stopping by our site and God bless you!

Slava May 21, 2013 at 10:56 am

Erik May 30, 2013 at 2:03 am

I’m late to this discussion, but I’m curious what people think of certain songs by Bob Marley and The Wailers: Redemption Song, Zion Train, One Love, maybe others. The lyrics sound potentially Christian-friendly, even if they are Rastafarian-influenced.

Derek Hill May 30, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Hello Erik. While I have never actually listened to Bob Marley, you may be right on lyrics. I don’t know the lyrics to the songs you mentioned, but other secular bands, like Coldplay, bring me to a place to think about God in some of their songs. Thank you for your thoughts! God bless you!

kESIAH June 6, 2013 at 3:28 pm

I haven’t really listened to a lot Christian music so I’ve never heard most of the songs on this list but one artist that I think should have been included is Dustin Kensrue. His album The Water and The Blood is amazing. It’s very deep and powerful. The song Suffering Servant is especially powerful. You should listen to it if you haven’t already.

Derek Hill January 20, 2014 at 7:08 pm

Hello Matthew. I went and checked out the song you mentioned. I was blown away! That was amazing! Thank you for you suggestion and thank you for visiting faith and entertainment! God bless you!

Dennis Howe January 27, 2014 at 6:37 pm

OK Derek, your youth is showing! It is a great list, but doesn’t include so many that are major influences and important songs for CCM. To put my two cents in, You missed out on John Michael Talbot, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, and Randy Matthews. it was nice to catch Keith Green, but his best song was Easter Song or Love Broke Through. Then Daniel Amos, Iona, older folks like Ralph Carmichael, groups like Stryper, Degarmo and Key. And the two best Christian albums of all times, very much my opinion…How the West was Won and Heart in Motion. Oh and I tried not to sate groups that were already mentioned…

Dennis Howe January 27, 2014 at 7:02 pm

OK Derek, let me get you started on an interesting journey. This list is also imperfect, but it includes a lot of people you probably haven’t heard of, or didn’t know then had backgrounds in CCM. Almost all of these albums can be found on Pandora, or the download page for, this has out of print permission given music .
Here’s the list….

Derek Hill January 27, 2014 at 8:08 pm

Hi Dennis. Thank you for your suggestions! This article was definitely challenging because we all think differently and would put different songs on these lists. I tried to put songs in here for everyone, but I will definitely check out some of the groups and songs you mentioned when I can. Thank you for stopping by our site and God bless!

babatunde babalola March 9, 2014 at 11:16 am

Good compilation. But have ever listened to songs by Andrae Crouch? Please do. He deserves a place in your list. Thanks.

Derek Hill March 10, 2014 at 2:36 pm

Thank you Babatunde! I have not heard of Andrae Crouch, but I will check him out when I get a chance! Thanks for the suggestion! God bless!

Thank you Daniel! We may update this list later on as new music comes out. God bless you!

oren April 12, 2014 at 7:00 am

Hey. Great list. But I would have loved to see Indescribable by Chris Tomlin, God’s Not Dead by Newsboys and Mercy by Parachute Band on there.

Derek Hill April 12, 2014 at 8:26 am

Thanks Oren! Those are all great songs too! It was definitely hard to leave some songs out but I do love Chris Tomlin and The Newsboys! I actually haven’t heard of the Parachute Band, but I will check them out. God bless man!

Adam Smith April 16, 2014 at 9:50 am

Great list overall. Must have been hard. My addition, unless I missed it is Tears of the Saints by Leeland. In my opinion up in the top 10 – for those who haven’t heard it, you’re missing out.

Derek Hill April 16, 2014 at 3:02 pm

Thank you Adam. I haven’t heard the song you mentioned but I appreciate you sharing it with me. I’ll check it out when I get a chance. God bless you man!

James Aston April 29, 2014 at 6:02 am

Hey – great list! Couldn’t resist mentioning this though – didn’t David Crowder write ‘How he Loves Us’ rather than John Mark McMillan?

Derek Hill April 29, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Hi James. Great question! Although David Crowder made this song very popular, John Mark McMillan is the one who wrote it. Thanks for stopping by our site and God bless!

GRACE May 15, 2014 at 9:36 pm

Derek Hill May 17, 2014 at 9:03 am

Hi Grace. Unfortunately these lists do have an end and some people do get left out. There are others I would have put in here myself but there just wasn’t enough room. Thank you for your suggestion though! God bless!

Lexx July 2, 2014 at 1:54 pm

Derek Hill July 2, 2014 at 7:01 pm

Derek Hill August 4, 2014 at 3:20 pm

Hi Katy. Thank you for your suggestion! That is a wonderful song! God bless!

CarolAnn Cardwell August 4, 2014 at 8:10 pm

Given the subject ” The Battle Begins” what song(s) would you recommend?

Derek Hill August 12, 2014 at 5:51 pm

Hi CarolAnn. Well depending on what type of music you listen to makes the difference. Here are a few songs that stand out to me.

Battle by Chris August (Contemporary)
Life War by Demon Hunter (Metal)
War Of The Minds by Flame (Rap)

Hope this helps! God bless!

Mike Olson August 28, 2014 at 2:05 pm

Derek, what a list and what a bunch of comments. All these comments must keep you very busy. I concur with some of your respondents that you seem to be very contemporary in so many of your choices. You did include some great hymns, of course. No surprise that many favorites were omitted. We all have our choices and the ones that mean something to us or our families –those passed down from ages past. You list does inspire me, a now retired person with time to check out these videos. I am not too keen at all on metal bands and K-Love seems only to like current stuff. I am glad that you acknowledged Keith Green (do check him out), Ray Boltz, Mercy Me, and a few others I recognized. Sandi Patty too–what a voice, no? Her “We Shall Behold Him” by Dottie Rambo is even better than the one you chose. And, are you familiar with And for those Tears He died? Or, the more (somewhat) recent Bow the Knee or In Christ Alone by Kristyn Getty? Or, the Ball Brothers rendition of another author’s stuff, It’s about the Cross. These tunes will overwhelm you too. Many older tunes you omitted, some great stuff from centuries ago…stuff you may not yet have crossed paths with at your young age. Sitting down with the words and music of Handel, Mendohollsohn, Faure, etc. (in English of course) can be more than riveting. For kicks, check out the old Swedish hymn, Children of the Heavenly Father…words cut to the quick and tune is almost ethereal. Oldie but more than a goodie. I am sure that you do not have all the time to check these out. Thanks for listing. “O happy day, O, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away, o happy day….etc. It ranked on pop music charts along with some other Christian songs even in that era of 50’s-70’s. “Pass it on” by Kurt Keizer. Have a ‘happy’ day. Also, almost forgot, your #1 song, A Grace is extremely, superbly done by Wintley Phipps on the Gaither video. This black singer’s rendition of that old ‘slave-Negro spiritaul’ song will flip you out. MIKE
…comes from the sixties, I think.

Derek Hill September 1, 2014 at 1:08 pm

Hey Mike,

I am more of a present day music lover for sure, as times change so does the music, but that definitely doesn’t take away from great music from the past. I have not heard of most of the artists/songs you mentioned and if I get a chance i will check them out. I guess to put things in perspective, we all have to understand that music is ever changing. People of the 11th through 13th centuries were very much involved with Gregorian Chants. They would have disliked this whole article probably LOL!

David September 17, 2014 at 3:59 pm

Great songs, but too many omissions. No Petra, no Imperials, no Keith Green, no Larry Norman.

Derek Hill September 22, 2014 at 4:28 pm

Hello David,

Thank you for your comment. I’m wondering if you are referencing the comments above, but we did add Keith Green to the list after reading so many commenting about him. He is number 12 on the list. Thanks for visiting our site and God bless!

normagene seymour October 26, 2014 at 2:53 pm

Looking for song,”CALVARY COVERS IT ALL—“

David October 28, 2014 at 1:07 pm

Some great songs on here. Where’s Petra?

Derek Hill October 30, 2014 at 7:35 pm

Hello David. Thanks for commenting and for your kindness. Petra is definitely a great band and there are many more that weren’t included here. I was surprised myself at how many amazing bands there are! God bless you and thanks for stopping by our site!

tim December 8, 2014 at 3:17 am

Hey Derek-
I wonder why some of the guys who did some really great stuff aren’t on at all, like Michael English- He not only has awesome music but is a great example of how God forgave a man who got sideways. Too much music is just fluff, and not enough about real things that happen. We all have stuff that is ugly and it is only keepin it real to pretend we don’t. Millions of pagans run from us because we act as if we don’t have any problems. We have the same ones they do. Just sayin….
