9 Famous Christian Actors

by Josh on January 1, 2013

Hollywood is a place that you would not typically identify with the Christian faith. There are many more films and actors or actresses that do not exemplify good morals and character. However, there are actors that do live by faith. Here is my list of nine well known or famous actors that are Christian. There are many other actors that are lesser known that are Christian but we will save those for another article. These nine actors are Christians. Some are not as public with their faith as others but these are all actors that have testified to Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

9.  Denzel Washington

Quote by Denzel  “A part of me still says, ‘Maybe, Denzel, you’re supposed to preach. Maybe you’re still compromising.’ I’ve had an opportunity to play great men and, through their words, to preach. I take what talent I’ve been given seriously, and I want to use it for good.”

Denzel is a Christian who at times has felt the pull to be a preacher. The quote above is a quote he made in response to a question about wanting to still preach.  Washington is also stated to have given 2.5 million dollars to help in the building of a church in Los Angeles.

8. Chuck Norris

Norris is an outspoken Christian actor who has been on Television promoting Bible study and the rights to pray in public schools.  Norris is on the board of directors for the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools which promotes the use of the Bible in public schools.  Norris has also authored a few Christian books.

7. Gary Busey

Busey Quote “I am proud to tell Hollywood that I am a Christian,” he says.  “For the first time I am now free to be myself.”

Gary Busey is a famous hollywood actor that is proud to declare himself a Christian.  He has had many ups and downs both personally and professionally, but remains a great witness to many for declaring his reliance on Christ as his savior.

6. Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg Quote  “The first thing I do when I start my day is, I get down on my hands and knees and give thanks to God. Whenever I go outside of my house, the first thing I do is stop at the church.”

Some might be surprised to learn of Wahlberg’s faith but seeing some interviews with him you can see that he is living out his love for Christ on a daily basis.

 5. Martin Sheen

Martin Sheen Quote “I have long since returned to my church. I have never forgotten that even though I turned my back on God, in my time of greatest need, he came to find me.”

Martin Sheen used this quote in talking about a near death experience he had and how it brought him back to God. Martin has since been very vocal about his Faith.

4. Jim Caviezel

Caviezel is best known for his role of Jesus in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ”. Caviezel used this as an opportunity to tell others of his own faith in Jesus!

"Baldwin is one of the most outspoken about his faith in Hollywood."

“Baldwin is one of the most outspoken about his Christian faith in Hollywood.”

3. Stephen Baldwin

Baldwin Quote “What is happening within Christianity is that it doesn’t know it needs to promote itself. “

This quote from Baldwin really exemplifies his evangelical nature. Baldwin is one of the most outspoken about his Christian faith in Hollywood.

2. Mel Gibson

Gibson Quote “ The Holy Ghost was working through me on this film, and I was just direction traffic”

Gibson brought one of the biggest Christian movies to ever hit Hollywood to the screen in “The Passion of the Christ”.  The film was met with much criticism but brought many to the truth of Jesus!

1. Kirk Cameron

Cameron Quote  “If you had the cure to cancer wouldn’t you share it? … You have the cure to death … get out there and share it.”

Kirk Cameron was known as a teen idol during his days on “Growing Pains”.  His adult life has been more about living out his passion for telling others about Christ.  Cameron started “The Way Of The Master” ministry which helps to teach people how to evangelize and share their faith more openly. He has been a part of a number of Christian films and often is looked to in interviews as a Hollywood spokesman for the Christian faith.  Seeing his passion to serve Christ and tell others about Jesus is inspirational.

It is inspirational to see actors in Hollywood that share their faith in Jesus with others and claim Him as Lord in a world and environment that is often far from Christian.

Share with us any stories of actors that you enjoy that share the Christian faith.

Now a days, standing up for one’s faith is not really looked down at, as a matter of fact it is encouraged! However, speaking out as a Christian is increasingly being disliked by the majority, being ridiculed, mocked and even attacked in some cases. Speaking the name of Jesus Christ has become tabooed, as it is repudiated by also be most. This is a sign to me that He is who He says He is and that His way is the only way! I love people who stand for Jesus and the true Christian Faith; sadly out of the actors listed in this article, I know only of one that truly walks the walk, the rest of them just talk the talk; they truly have not taken up their cross and followed Jesus. This can be so misleading to people in search for the Truth, seen that what they read in the Bible of how a Christian should be, is not constant with the ones who called themselves “christians”. I can understand, however, that like most of us, some of these public figures might be struggling with living out the Truth of God; and I say some, because for sure there are some listed here that are true hypocrites, definately worshiping the wrong god. Worshiping god, is not what is under fire, is worshiping Jesus, which we all know is the True God what is being taken out!Isa_29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
Mat_15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Mar_7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. THESE PUBLIC FIGURES REACH SO MANY THAT’S WHY WE MUST PRAY FOR THEM, SO THAT JESUS LIGHT CAN SHINE THROUGH THEM AND BRING OTHERS TO THE TRUTH!

Thanks for your comments Mabel. You made some good points.

who made you God? is the question I would first like to ask you. As far a I can tell, if they say that they are Christian and at least do some deeds to further the kingdom, then what is the big deal. have you ever thought that God’s standards are different than yours? Just a thought

Jack Wellman January 1, 2013 at 8:29 pm

I don’t believe it is any coincidence that many of these are my favorite actors. I didn’t know about Whalberb though. Thanks Josh. Great selections here.

Josh January 2, 2013 at 7:50 pm

Thanks for the encouragement Jack. I am a big fan of Kirk Cameron. He is doing so much to further the Gospel!

Hi, Josh. Enjoyed this list a lot! Was blown away to learn the actor, Gary Busey, claiming to be a Christian. I pray that is true. Like Mabel above said, many talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk.
A blessed New Year, 2013, Josh! Patty

Been friends with Zachary Levi’s father for 23 years. He’s a proud poppa who is quick to testify of his son’s faith in Christ. You may want to check into him as well. (appears in Chuck, Tangled, the new Thor movie and on Broadway.)

Derek Hill September 11, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Thank you for this, Ski! We will check him out for sure! God bless!

Derek Hill September 11, 2013 at 4:08 pm

I just checked him out! His character in “Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel” was awesome! I checked out his wikipedia and I am thrilled to see another Christian actor that I didn’t know about! Blessings!

Jeff September 16, 2013 at 10:20 pm

I have a hard time believing Martin Sheen is a Christian. I don’t know his heart, but I’ve seen his fruit.

Derek Hill September 17, 2013 at 8:52 pm

Someone once told me “You will be surprised who you see in Heaven.” You are right, only God knows his heart. Remember, Paul once was Saul. God bless you, thank you for your comment, and thank you for visiting our site!

Barbara February 22, 2014 at 12:54 pm

Thank you for this reminder. It hurts my heart when I see so much judgment written against these actors in the comments. I would hate to have all my battles and failures posted for the world to see. I think most of us Christians would not look very Christ-like if all our sins were posted online. Until we meet in heaven, we will, sadly, continue to make mistakes and hopefully, grow from those mistakes. I just pray that the people judging remember that being a Christian does not mean being perfect. The more public your profile, the harder Satan tries to knock them down.

Thank you for pointing out these fellow Christians. I, like another poster, liked these actors so much but never realized they were Christians. It does my heart good to see them publicly professing their faith in an age where just professing faith in Christ can have many negative consequences.

Derek Hill February 23, 2014 at 2:37 pm

Amen Barbara! You said it perfectly! We all make mistakes and God still uses us for His glory! God bless you!

Lucy February 21, 2014 at 2:20 pm

I get awfully tired of people saying that they don’t see the “fruit”. All have sinned even we Christians. Celebrities have it worse than you and I because every move they make is watched. We don’t know what they have in their hearts. We don’t know what temptations they face. We don’t know what trials they’ve been through. Only God does. That is why only God can judge us.I have a loved one that is always pointing out the “fruits” of others. He never seems to notice his own. Too many people are like that.
Thanks for the positive article about “stars”.

Derek Hill February 22, 2014 at 9:43 am

Yes! You are so right Lucy! Only God can see the heart and I like your thought on how the stars have it harder because every move they make is watched. That is so true. We need to pray for those in Hollywood! God bless you and thank you for your thoughts!

C.J. September 17, 2013 at 8:24 am

Thank you for this list — some I knew, some I didn’t know they are Christians. I have the wonderful opportunity to meet Kirk Cameron on September 24th because I won his contest for tickets to attend his live event for his new movie, Unstoppable. I am so excited and blessed! It was very cool to see him as number 1 on your list! I have chosen to boycott many films and actors because of their clearly non-Christian stance. I know there must be more Christian celebrities and I pray that they will rise up in this time of strife in our world and proclaim the name of Jesus so that others may be saved.

Derek Hill September 17, 2013 at 8:54 pm

That is AMAZING! Kirk Cameron is such an awesome man! And you are so right, more celebrities need to rise up and proclaim Jesus! God bless you!

Leo McDonald September 17, 2013 at 9:16 am

Thanks for the article. Patricia Heaton from Everybody Loves Raymond and The Middle is a “walk the talk” born again believer. You can find her testimony here:

Derek Hill September 17, 2013 at 8:58 pm

Thank you for your suggestion, Leo! I just read it and she is definitely a professing believer of Jesus! Thank you for this and God bless you!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I love Mel Gibson’s acting, but he was quoted as saying one time that he loved his wife; eventhough, he knew she was not going to heaven, because she was not Catholic. The Lord did work through him though by the making of his movie.

Derek Hill September 17, 2013 at 9:00 pm

I think we all have said really dumb things in our own walks with the Lord. Granted, if Mel really said this than he doesn’t understand fully the nature of God, but none of us do and we are all striving everyday to be more and more like Christ. If Mel is doing this, then I believe he is a Christian, just a confused one LOL!

Chadocat November 7, 2013 at 1:13 pm

Some of these were obvious, such a Kirk Cameron and Stephen Baldwin. Mark Wahlberg? How can someone pray on his knees and then make a movie like “Ted”, which was full of dope smoking, gratuitous sex and the “F” bomb flung out continuously. There’s a difference between uttering the words and actually BEING a Christian. Others like Martin Sheen and Mel Gibson, though I appreciate Gibson’s “Passion” they are Roman Catholic, not Christian per-se.

Derek Hill November 9, 2013 at 10:07 pm

Hello Chadocat. This article was on people that have testified that they believe in Jesus and we are all on different journeys in our walks. Mark Wahlberg is probably not nearly as far as you are in your journey, but that doesn’t mean that God is not working on him. And Roman Catholic has nothing to do with whether you believe in Jesus. A true Christian shouldn’t be identified as a Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran or anything else. They should identify themselves with Christ, period. Thank you for visiting our site. God bless!

Guest March 1, 2014 at 11:28 pm

I agree with you except for one obvious point. The Bible says Jesus sheep hear his voice and the voice of another with unsound doctrine they will not follow. So denominations and what they teach do matter. Not all are teaching the truth of Jesus words.

Derek Hill March 2, 2014 at 7:55 pm

Hello Guest. I deleted your first comment because of the swear word, but I will address it. Mel Gibson has had many faults just as I am sure you have. Only his are publicized for the world to see while yours are not. In God’s eyes, sin is sin, period. Murder and little white lies hold the same weight. Instead of thinking of him as a sinner only, maybe think of him as a sinner who is trying daily to live for God. Even Noah got drunk and David committed adultery with Bathsheba and allowed her husband to be murdered to cover up his baby with her. You are right that Jesus’ sheep do hear His voice, and unfortunately we all go the other direction sometimes. Every one of us sin, but we can all come back to the Father in repentance. God bless.
