Top 7 Anticipated Christian Movies of 2014

by Derek on January 26, 2014

2014 is going to be a HUGE year for Christian cinema!  There are many movies coming out with Christian themes and storylines.  With this huge push Hollywood is realizing that there is a big audience that is ready and willing to come watch movies that have Christian principles in them.

Here are 7 of the top anticipated movies to come out this year!  Enjoy!

7. Heaven Is For Real

This movie is based on a true story and it follows the journey of a boy, Colton, who has a near death experience and goes to heaven for a brief time.  He is revived and the doctors claim it is a miracle that he survived.  Now his parents must learn what faith and trust are all about.  Colton begins to show them things that he should not know and soon the whole town is wondering.  This movie is set for release April 16, 2014.

6. Son Of God

“Son of God” is based off of the “Bible Miniseries” that aired last year.  It follows the life of Jesus through birth, life, crucifixion, death and resurrection.  It features Diogo Morgado as Jesus and Roma Downey as His mother, Mary.  The “Bible Miniseries” was a huge hit in 2013 and I have no doubt that “Son Of God” will do just as well.

5. Gimme Shelter

“Gimme Shelter” follows the life of a teenager who gets pregnant and leaves her abusive mother to find her father.  He rejects her and she is forced to live on the streets.  She is welcomed into a home for women like her and finally feels like she has a family for the first time.  Vanessa Hudgens has the lead role in this one.  “Gimme Shelter” is set for release on January 24, 2014.

“Left Behind” is starring Nicholas Cage as the lead role, and is also featuring Jordin Sparks as Shasta Carvell. It is set to release on June 19, 2014.

“Left Behind” is starring Nicholas Cage as the lead role, and is also featuring Jordin Sparks as Shasta Carvell. It is set to release on June 19, 2014.

4. Left Behind

This is a remake of “Left Behind” from 2000.  It will follow the same storyline as the previous one: millions of people vanish and the ones left behind must struggle through the chaos that is around them.  “Left Behind” is starring Nicholas Cage as the lead role, and is also featuring Jordin Sparks as Shasta Carvell.  It is set to release on June 19, 2014.

3. God’s Not Dead

Oh boy!  I am excited for this one!  This movie showcases the life of a man, Josh Wheaton, in college that is forced into showing his faith outwardly to his peers in his Philosophy 150 class.  The instructor, Professor Radisson, is an atheist and starts off day one with having every student write “God is dead” in their notebooks.  Josh tells Professor Radisson that he can’t because he is a Christian and Professor Radisson issues the challenge for Josh to defend his antithesis.  Many great debates are sure to come out of this one and it will be a way for us to see how to defend our faith in the public arena.  This movie stars Willie and Korie Robertson, Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain to name a few.  “God’s Not Dead” is scheduled to release on March 24, 2014.

Check out the official trailer for God's Not Dead below

2. Exodus

This film is being directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Prometheus) and it is packed with many big name actors and actresses including: Christian Bale, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley!  The storyline will follow the journey of Moses, played by Christian Bale, as he leads the Israelites out of Egypt and the clutches of Pharaoh.  It is currently set to release in December of this year.

1. Noah

And here we are at Noah.  This is the movie that everyone is talking about!  It follows the story of Noah as he builds the ark in order to survive the massive flood that God is sending to wipe out life to start mankind over again.  This movie has many famous people including: Russell Crowe (Noah), Jennifer Connelly (Noah’s wife), Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins.  I feel that it is safe to say that “Noah” will be the biggest grossing Christian movie to be released this year.  If you have not watched the trailer for this one yet please check it out!  The special effects look amazing and the storyline looks fairly solid, with a few added extras from Hollywood like always.  “Noah” is set to release on March 28, 2014.

There are many amazing Christian films that are coming out this year!  Which ones do you think you will go and see?  Besides these 7, I would also like to mention one more, “I’m In Love With A Church Girl”, which was released on January 21, 2014.  It has an interesting story line and stars Ja Rule and Toby Mac.  You can find the trailer on YouTube.  God bless you all!

Dennis January 27, 2014 at 6:46 am

Hi you can also include a movie I-Origins upcoming about evolution and the christian belief of creation.

Derek Hill January 27, 2014 at 10:54 am

Hi Dennis! Thanks for your suggestion! I haven’t heard much about this movie, but I went and read a few reviews on it. It doesn’t seem to have a lot of Christian emphases in it, but I could be totally wrong. Thanks for stopping by our site and God bless!

anton meyers January 27, 2014 at 12:36 pm

Im kind of leery bout Noah, given the stories abounding about environmentalist garbage being tacked in to why the world is being destroyed…And re:Left Behind…Who is “Shasta Carvell?” theres no character in the books by that name…

Derek Hill January 27, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Hi Anton. The thing we all need to keep in mind is that these movies are being made by people who may not be professing Christians. However, these movies may spark an interest from unbelievers and could be the catalyst for drawing them to Christ. I think this movie is going to draw some people to believe in God. For the unbelievers it will make them check the Bible out and see. For believers, we already know the parts that are wrong, but God bless the film makers for trying! We are all “living movies”. We are “Noah” to the world. Are we without sin and mistakes? The answer is no, and it is only by the grace of God through the blood of Christ that we will have an eternity in Heaven! As far as Shasta Carvell, you can find many websites that are reviewing this movie and she is mentioned in most of them. God bless!

Amen! ^_^ I agree with you Derek.
Nothing be to get confused here.
Read the Scripture and received the revelation personally would be better. :)
/it’s all about grace

Amen! Thank you for stopping by our site! God bless you man!

Scott January 27, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Alone Yet Not Alone?

Derek Hill January 27, 2014 at 2:55 pm

Hi Scott. That movie was released last year. This article is for movies being released this year. Thank you for your suggestion though! God bless!

justsaying January 27, 2014 at 8:25 pm

I dont get it. Nicholas Cage has done some very evil movies, Why cast him in Left Behind?

Derek Hill January 28, 2014 at 9:56 am

Hello “justsaying”. One thing to consider is that nothing happens outside of the will of God. That means that God is allowing this to happen. Another thing to consider is that you and I have done some pretty terrible things in our life to, called sins. Every sin we commit is a slap in the face to God, and I think we all need to understand that even though we may not agree all of the time on who does this and who does that, we can all agree that we have all fallen short of the glory of God and the fact remains that we don’t deserve to go to Heaven. But God in His everlasting love and grace provided us a way through the blood of Christ. I have a feeling God is going to do some amazing things this year through the cinema and if He can use Saul (later called Paul), who described himself as the worst of all sinners, to get HIs will accomplished in the Bible, I think we can expect nothing less than that from who He uses to promote His story in Hollywood. God bless you and thank you for stopping by our site!

Em February 16, 2014 at 6:06 am

Why use Nicolas Cage.. and I might add all the other big names? Because they bring the crowds. In Hollywood it’s about the bottom line, alway$. My 2cents: Forget the hollywood hype and watch the true drama unfold in the words of scripture.

Em February 16, 2014 at 6:09 am

p.s. I’m not saying there aren’t good, moral movies out there. There are, take the ones from Hallmark for instance. And, Alone, Yet not Alone I’d like to see.

Derek Hill February 16, 2014 at 7:31 pm

Hi Em. Even God can use Hollywood to win sinners. He even allowed a man headed to hell (Judas Iscariot) be a direct disciple of Jesus! As believers we get it. Hollywood will not tell the story exactly portrayed in the Bible and they will glam up their movies for profit, but if those movies can make people think “Huh…I wonder if the Bible is true” then praise the Lord! Look at you and I. We were once sinners that someone surely looked at and said “yeah right…they aren’t ever going to receive the Gospel ever”, but I have and it is to the glory of God. He proved them wrong, not me. So, let’s see what God does with these films. Amen?

Carol January 29, 2014 at 10:19 am

Thank you Derek. Do you know anything about a movie called “Alone but not alone”?

Derek Hill January 29, 2014 at 4:12 pm

Hi Carol! I’m assuming you mean “Alone Yet Not Alone”. Yes this movie looks very interesting. Here is a quote straight from the Alone Yet Not Alone website.

“The Leininger family settled deep within America’s new frontier, in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvannia. They were celebrating their blessings, their faith and a bountiful harvest when their family was torn apart by the Penn’s Creek Massacre. When Barbara and Regina are carried away and separated by Allegheny warriors, both sisters rely on their faith in God’s truth, even in their darkest hour. Rich in historical details, Alone Yet Not Alone is an inspirational, true story of a family caught in the cross fire of the French and Indian war.” (

I hope this helps! Thank you for stopping by our site and God bless!

Nancy January 30, 2014 at 5:05 pm

We need more of these Christian movies, I am glad the are making more of them.
I don’t like all the violence that are in the theaters now.

Derek Hill January 30, 2014 at 5:10 pm

Hello Nancy. I completely agree! There is a big audience in Christian cinema and Hollywood is realizing it! Hopefully they will continue making more like these ones! God bless!

Lesa January 30, 2014 at 11:52 pm

I appreciate your responses to some of the questions/statements because I was thinking the same things as the other readers. Your responses were spot on and what I needed to hear.

Derek Hill January 31, 2014 at 5:21 pm

You’re welcome Lesa! God bless!

Mailyn January 31, 2014 at 8:50 am

Wow! glad to know there are movies coming depicting Christianity.

Derek Hill January 31, 2014 at 5:21 pm

Amen Mailyn! I feel the same way! God bless!

Danielle Aliposa February 4, 2014 at 5:15 pm

Im so excited of seeing movies about the life of Jesus Christ! Thank u for Your Saving Grace, my Lord and Savior.

Derek Hill February 4, 2014 at 8:56 pm

We are too Danielle! Thank you for visiting our site and God bless you!

Jill February 17, 2014 at 4:08 pm

Not sure what part of Noah you have been watching but it appears that the only thing biblical about it is that is about a guy named Noah, who builds a boat and puts animals on it. Nothing else about the story is biblical. It has a very strong environmental agenda! Be careful in recommending this.

Derek Hill February 19, 2014 at 6:37 pm

Hi Jill, I am going to say what I said earlier in the comments: “The thing we all need to keep in mind is that these movies are being made by people who may not be professing Christians. The answer is no, and it is only by the grace of God through the blood of Christ that we will have an eternity in Heaven!”

If we were held to the same standard that we place on the secular media by God, then none of us would even be qualified to speak His Name to the hurting world. We are all sinners. We have all missed the mark horribly in our sins and it is only Jesus that can make a life change. I honestly think that Noah will draw some people to Christ. Even though it has its mistakes and flaws, we have to understand that we have our mistakes and flaws too. It’s up to the viewers to see past them and check the Bible out. I do thank you for visiting our site and for your concerns. God bless!

sgt pepper February 25, 2014 at 10:23 pm

You may want to reconsider “NOAH” from the list. Check this article about how it bypassed actual and truthful biblical accounts.

Derek Hill February 26, 2014 at 7:29 pm

Hi Sgt Pepper

I know this movie is getting a lot of criticism, and much of it is probably right, but we won’t know until it is released in theaters for us to see for ourselves. What ever is the result from this movie, we can only hope and pray that it will be the stepping stone for one person to accept Christ in their lives. If one person is saved through this than it was worth it! God bless!

Lourdes February 27, 2014 at 6:15 am

Would you know if the movie God’s not dead will be shown in the Philippines? Hoping to hear from you soon. Thanks!

Derek Hill February 28, 2014 at 9:22 pm

Hello Lourdes. I honestly don’t know if the Philippines will be showing this film. Since you have an internet connection I would check local theaters and see about it when it is released. God bless!

Nancy March 5, 2014 at 5:58 am

Hi Derek. I just read thru the replies you posted to the responses people had about various movies. I was struck with awe at how you put thought and love in each one & I believe I could hear Jesus saying the same things. God bless you!

Derek Hill March 6, 2014 at 7:40 pm

God bless you and thank you Nancy! I honestly believe that God will use the Christian films being made this year for His glory. I think some people will come to Christ because of these movies and I say praise the Lord! Thank you for stopping by our site!

Vic March 8, 2014 at 6:34 am

I am so excited and can’t wait to watch movies like this. I hope this will be shown in our country.

Derek Hill March 10, 2014 at 2:34 pm

We are excited too Vic! I hope they will show these films in your country too! God bless!

Gen March 12, 2014 at 10:56 pm

God has a purpose why doing this movies. Now a days people were too lazy to read their bible, that’s why God made a way, like before He sent his only beloved son, Jesus, to save us. Now this movies; so that people may realize that God is doing a way to save us.

Derek Hill March 13, 2014 at 8:40 pm

We are hoping that these movies will definitely spark some interest in God from unbelievers! Thank you for your comment Gen! God bless you!

Reenie August 4, 2014 at 3:44 am

Hello, have you seen the movie, “Noah”, since your posting here, because I am shocked you could even list it as a “Christian” movie. It is irresponsible of you to include this movie in your list, seekers and/or new believers may trust your poor judgement. Please remove it or explain that it is definately NOT a Christian based movie but rather, fictional trash.
Thank you

Derek Hill August 4, 2014 at 3:41 pm

Hi Reenie. I understand your disappointment with Noah. I think all Christians were let down. However, I would still rather see a movie like this from Hollywood then most of the junk they release each year. You know, God does things perfectly in His timing and even though this movie was not based on the Bible hardly at all, God did something amazing with it! The controversy that this movie created actually caused around a 300% spike of people reading the actual story on YouVersion! So God was still glorified through this movie. I am going to keep it on this list because at the time this movie was anticipated to be a great film and even though it wasn’t it prompted a TON of people to read the real story for themselves and that is awesome! I appreciate your thoughts and I by no means intended to offend anyone but this movie has done a lot of good that it did not intend. God bless you!

George W Kelly August 14, 2014 at 7:22 am

I like your list. I watched the movie Noah. They defently had some artistic freedom, but never the less. I think that we are in the great awakening . The last push before the rapture…Heaven is For Real, is a Big Blessing..

Derek Hill August 14, 2014 at 8:16 pm

Thank you for your comment George. I appreciate feedback from you about Noah. You may be right; we may very well be in a great awakening. God bless you!

Stacie August 29, 2014 at 2:54 pm

According to The movie Noah, fallen angles built the ark, there were alot more than 8 people on the ark, Noah was a tirent who was only supposed to save the animals not the people, so he decided to Take it upon himself to kill his granddaughters. Because he believed that God wanted him to. So according to the movie Noah was a false prophet. And he disobeyed God allowing the granddaughters to live and repopulate the earth. So technically we are only here because Noah disobeyed God. The movie is blasphemy!

Derek Hill September 1, 2014 at 1:15 pm

Hi Stacie

Thank you for your comment. I agree that Noah was not a good movie, but this article is not about the best Christian movies. It was written before any of them came out. It was about the “anticipated” Christian movies. Noah was very anticipated and it also let most of us down. However, I will say that because of this movie, YouVersion got a 300% spike on the real story! This movie caused tons of people to read the real story for themselves, so I will say that even what is meant for evil can be used by God for good! (Genesis 50:20)

betty September 19, 2014 at 1:09 pm

Shouldn’t have been so quick to “feel safe” about Noah being such a success. It could have been… and Likely it would have been had it only followed the real story and not ventured off into “made up untruths”. Many just refused to go see it when they realized what a mess it made of the story.

Derek Hill September 22, 2014 at 4:32 pm

Hello Betty,

I agree with you in that the movie did not come close to doing the real story justice. I did write this article before the movie came out, hoping that it would speak truth. However, in my replies above I mentioned that it did cause people to check out the real story through YouVersion. They got a 300% spike of readers because of this movie, so God did use this and make some good from it! God bless!
